2014 Golf Croquet Carnival

Thirty six players from Wollongong, Forster, Port Hacking, Albury, Canberra, Blue Mountains, Deniliquin, Jambaroo, Toronto, Young and Walla Wagga, as well as Wagga Wagga entered our 2014 Golf Croquet Carnival, which was held in pleasant weather conditions, although the afternoons did get warm.

This Carnival was played on three lawns for the first time, even though two lawns were slightly smaller, but in proportion. It was unfortunate that grass growth was delayed, however all is on track to  have all three full lawns up and running later in the year.

Croquet players learning some tips at Wagga Wagga

On a cold and damp day, NSW State Director of Coaching, Barb Piggott, held an extremely successful Workshop for both Association and Golf Croquet players in Wagga Wagga recently.
33 very keen players participated, and all found the workshop to be most enjoyable, informative and helpful. Thanks to Barb for finding the time to come to Wagga Wagga.

2013 3WAY Challenge

20 players, representing the Walla Walla, Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Young croquet clubs competed for the 3WAY Challenge Shield in glorious Autumn weather.
Once again it was a tight tussle with some brilliant clearing and hoop running.

Albury Croquet Club proved that they are the club to beat, successfully defending their title.
Young were hot on their heels throughout the day and were the runner-up.

2013 Golf Croquet Carnival

A full field of 24 players from Maitland, Macquarie City, Toronto, Jambaroo, Blue Mountains, Wollongong, Young, Deniliquin, Dubbo and Horsham enjoyed four days of golf croquet at Wagga Wagga last weekend.

Carol, Doug, Terry & LynPlayers encountered rain on the first day of the doubles, but showed determination to finish all games but one allocated for that day. Fortunately the following three days were bright and sunny and some excellent croquet was played, with many local spectators witnessing the very exciting final.
Carol Hayes from Wollongong had a financially rewarding Carnival winning the doubles with partner Doug Leabeater from Young.

Carol again fronted up to play in the singles final, losing to Graham Innocent from Dubbo, a 1 handicap player, who played first class croquet over the Carnival.

It is hoped that next year the Club will have a third lawn, and will be able to accommodate those visiting players that were not able to play this year because of limited lawn space.

Hertz again assisted with sponsorship this year allowing the Wagga Club to increase prizemoney, which, as a result, attracted some excellent croquet players.

Robertson Oval Lights are on

Ever since the Wagga Wagga Croquet Club was re-located to the Bolton Park / Robertson Oval precinct in the 1950s there has been endless talk of upgrading Robertson Oval.
This has finally been completed and the lights switched on for the first time this evening.
Below is footage of the lights switched on for the first time.

Clearing plants along northern fence

On Monday evening, 19th November, twenty members and partners attended the Wagga Wagga Croquet Club for a working bee.

All the shrubs and plants along the north/east boundary were cut down to allow for the fence to be relocated around the extra land that the Wagga Wagga City Council have allocated for the Club‘s third lawn.

The Club is now waiting for Council to clear the rubbish and mark out the land allocated so that it can clear the site and commence laying the third lawn, hopefully early next year.

Wagga 2012 Gateball Champions
Jim Nicholls & Tjanna Lai

Tjanna Lai and Jim Nicholls took full advantage of the reduced numbers playing in the 2nd Annual Gateball Club Championship. With Josh Willscher away and defending champion Will Antill sleeping in, Tjanna’s experience and Jim’s accurate hitting proved to be too good a combination against regular association players Ruth Wilson & Robyn Willis and Peter & Wendy Lloyd.

The format was a double round robin with each pair playing the other pairs twice. As wel as Tjanna winning 3 out of 4 games she refereed the remaining 2 games. Thanks Tjanna, and congratulations to you and Jim.

3 Way Inter Club Challenge

Teams from Wodonga, Walla Walla, Albury and Young travelled to Wagga Wagga early May for the
inaugural Inter Club Challenge.

Weather was perfect, and the day culminated with the Albury Club of Brenda Bruhn, Max Eyres, Rob
Watson and Michael Matthews winning the Challenge with the Wagga Club second.

Everyone enjoyed the day immensely and plans are to make the Challenge an annual event to be
held at the central Wagga Wagga Club.

Our local legend – Nola Scott

As part of the 2012 Australian Day Awards ceremony, life member Nola Scott was  inducted into Wagga Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame as a Local Legend.

Nola joined the Wagga Wagga Croquet club in 1984.

Nola was a self taught player, learning the game through books. She qualified as a Level 1 Coach in 1988 and was qualified until 2010 when she allowed her qualification to lapse as her husband was ill and couldn’t dedicate the time required. Although, no longer formally qualified, she is still coaching in a limited capacity at the moment. During her time as a coach at Wagga Wagga she has trained the majority of the Club’s Association players, including Jim Nicholls who is a current member of the NSW State Association Team and Marga Podnicks who has represented South Australia at both Association and Golf Croquet. Nola was also involved in introducing croquet to a number of adult groups and the Schools Croquet Program ran by CNSW.

In 1998 Nola became the first qualified referee in Wagga Wagga.

Nola has served on the committee for no less than 24 years of the 28 years she has been a member. Her commitment and enthusiasm to members, the club, and to the sport in general has been instrumental in building a thriving club of approximately 70+ today.

Nola is also known for getting the last word in, however on this occasion she was speechless, a phenomenon her daughter has never witnessed before.
